REBORN Brings You Back to Nature: A Responsible Tourism Exploration at Borneo Happy Farm
Field Study Launch: Responsible Tourism Emphasizes Community and Multi-Stakeholder Participation
The Centre for Responsible Borneo (REBORN) field study delegation recently visited Borneo Happy Farm for an on-site assessment and in-depth discussions on the future direction of responsible tourism. Both parties reached a preliminary consensus in areas including culture, research, and community participation, and plan to take the Bau (Serian–Bau area) as a starting point to integrate tourism and cultural resources across Southeast Asia. This initiative aims to promote the sustainable development of responsible tourism while enhancing the region’s influence in the international responsible tourism arena. The field study particularly emphasized that advancing responsible tourism requires not only the efforts of tourism organizations and enterprises, but also the active participation and collaboration of local communities and stakeholders from all sectors of society.

In-Depth Experience: A Balanced Focus on Ecology and Culture
During the field study, Mr. Fang Wenxiang, a respected community leader, personally introduced the delegation to knowledge about arowana fish, guinea pigs, grassland ecosystems, and rainforest ecology. However, what left an even deeper impression on the delegation was the philosophy and cultural values advocated by Happy Farm. Visitors are not only able to connect closely with nature, but also gain deeper insights into Sarawak’s history and culture, Chinese heritage, and the spirit of local entrepreneurship, allowing them to return to nature while experiencing meaningful cultural depth.
Mr. Fang explained that Happy Farm integrates agro-tourism, ecotourism, cultural experiences, educational farming, and leisure tourism, while incorporating principles of natural science and environmental protection. It stands as a practical example of responsible tourism driven collaboratively by the community, businesses, and society at large. He emphasized that protecting the ecosystem is ultimately protecting ourselves, and that returning to nature allows the mind to attain clarity and tranquillity.

Potential and Alignment: Sarawak and the Principles of Responsible Tourism
Sarawak’s ecological resources and cultural diversity have long been underestimated by the outside world. Upholding a spirit of inclusiveness, pragmatism, and rationality, Sarawak possesses strong potential for further development in the field of responsible tourism and is well positioned to gradually become a focus of national and even international attention. This vision closely aligns with the direction of the Responsible Ecotourism Borneo Network’s “Green & Gold Exploration Journey” initiative.
Professor Dr. Hiram Ting noted that responsible tourism is a way of life. Through the collective efforts of communities and various sectors of society, local cultures are respected, the natural environment is protected, and communities are able to achieve sustainable development. He stated: “We hope that through responsible tourism, travel itself can become a different kind of experience, one in which both visitors and local communities’ benefit."
Looking Ahead: Driving Sustainable Development from Local Initiatives to Broader Impact
Following the visit, both parties reached a preliminary consensus that the next phase will focus on culture and research as key entry points. Starting from the Bau area, efforts will expand from localized initiatives to a broader regional scale, promoting the sustainable development of responsible tourism and further enhancing the area’s influence within the international responsible tourism arena.
